UGA faculty member Sarah Shannon was among three USG faculty honored with the Felton Jenkins, Jr. Hall of Fame Faculty Award at the University System of Georgia (USG) 21th annual Regents’ Scholarship Gala "The Sky's the Limit," which raised more than $4.5 million from generous sponsors to expand need-based scholarships for USG students across the state.

The black-tie gala, hosted at the Delta Flight Museum in August 23 by Maria Taylor and Elle Duncan, honored faculty, alumni and friends representing USG institutions across the state.

Shannon is the ninth UGA winner of the award since its creation in 1997.

“It was truly a privilege to be honored among such dedicated and accomplished educators in the University System of Georgia at the USG scholarships and awards gala," said Shannon, Meigs Professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences department of sociology and director of the Criminal Justice Studies Program.

An award-winning teacher and publicly engaged scholar widely quoted in media around the world, Shannon has received recognition for excellence in undergraduate instruction, research mentoring, creative teaching, and service-learning. She proudly facilitates UGA's first-ever Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program course in partnership with the Clarke County Jail (SOCI 4470S).

The Felton Jenkins Jr. Hall of Fame Award is named after the late USG Board of Regents member, Dr. Felton Jenkins “in honor of his dedication to the mission of the University System of Georgia and his life of exemplary service to others.”
